The FIrst Glossop BookFest: July 6th, 2019

Thanks to the initiative and drive of my friend Nicola Worsick, author and illustrator of the Captain Cuthbert and Scat the Cat books for children, ably supported by my outstanding fellow-author Pamela Turton, we’re running a BookFest in Glossop on Saturday July 6th this year. It will take place in the Methodist Church, Chapel Street, from 2-6 p.m. Local authors and illustrators will be allocated tables at which they can display copies of their work, discuss their writing with visitors, and sell signed copies of their publications (mostly at below RRP). Illustration and writing workshops are planned, and there will be activities for children such as pictures to colour in. Tea, coffee and (we hope!) cakes and biscuits will be provided in the church café.

Entry to the event is FREE, though our caterer will charge a little for refreshments.

About a dozen tables have been booked by authors and illustrators from around this part of the High Peak, so there will be plenty for visitors to see and discuss. Three workshops are planned, and there might yet be one or two more.

In association with the BookFest we’re running a spoken word / open mic evening in the Tree Room, upstairs in The Oakwood on George Street (two minutes’ walk from the Methodist Church), on the Wednesday before the main event – July 3rd – from 7.30 to 9.30. We have a few acts lined up but five-minute spots will be available for anyone who wishes to perform.

This is the first attempt at a festival of this kind in Glossop, the “gateway to the Peak District”, which already houses outstanding artistic events such as the Glossop Music Festival, performances by Glossopera, and regular performances by our own Partington Theatre Company. We hope the BookFest will become another annual event.
